UNTOLD – WRITE ASSAMESE
Do you write fiction? Untold – Write Assamese is looking for short new stories written in Assamese, from creative writers living in India. You do not have to be an experienced fiction writer; you just need to have a story to share and be keen to join a programme to develop your writing and storytelling skills.
We are particularly interested in receiving submissions from women and LGBTIQ+ writers and those exploring similar subjects through their fiction.
If you are selected, you will be invited to join an 8-day training workshop to develop your story (fiction). This will be held in Assam during April. The workshop is free for participants (those attending from outside Assam will need to cover their own travel expenses to/from Assam).
Stories must be 2,000 words (minimum) – 5,000 words (max). Longer stories will not be considered. Each writer can only submit one story.
Deadline for submitting a story is 1159PM Indian Standard time on Monday 28 February 2022.

This project is supported by the British Council and managed by Untold Narratives CIC in the UK and BEE Books in Kolkata. It is a collaboration between Untold and BEE Books to promote Indian literature in translation.
The project focuses on Assam, and is working with new, unpublished (in translation) Assamese writers. Plus, those writing in Assamese in other parts of India if they choose to apply and are selected.

- Stories must be fiction.
- Poetry, journalism and works of non-fiction are not eligible for this call.
- Stories can be no longer than 5,000 words, and a minimum of 2000 words.
- Stories can only be submitted in Assamese.
- Each writer can only submit one story.
- Selected writers must be available to attend the workshop in April (exact dates TBC) and be available to continue working (remotely) with an editor /translator on their story May-October 2022.
- Writers must be Indian citizens and who preferably live in Assam. Indian citizens residing abroad, and non-Indian citizens are not eligible.
- Writers must be aged 18 or older.
- Writers will be asked to include their name, location and contact details when submitting a story. This information is for monitoring purposes only and will be stored securely and not shared beyond the team without permission from the writer.
- All stories will be stored confidentially and securely and will not be shared publicly without the writer’s permission.
- Writers will be contacted with the outcome of their submission by March 25th 2022.
Selection process:
Stories will read by a team of experienced Assamese readers, writers, and project partners, who will select 8 aspiring writers to join the scheme. The panel will be looking for the writer’s potential – your submission is an example to illustrate your fiction writing ability and your voice.
This is not a competition. It is a writer development programme, looking for creative writers who want to develop and find new platforms for their fiction.
The writers selected from this open call will have the opportunity to work with an experienced translator and a literary editor to develop their creative writing skills, and the opportunity to connect with other writers (particularly women and those in the LGBTIQ+ community) in Assam.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES FOR TRANSLATORS
1. Submit a published or a non-published work of translation from Assamese to English.
2. Attach the original text along with the translation.
3. The translation, complete or part of the text, should not exceed 2000 words.
4. In the email, write the subject line: Translation for Write Assamese
Once you submit your translation, it will be reviewed by a jury, who will shortlist the participants. The selected translators will have to attend a 7-day offline workshop in and around Assam.
We are not looking for stories in translation, just good translators!
